Chief Keith Johnson is the current Chief at Loudoun County Fire and Rescue. Chief Johnson is a fourth-generation firefighter who began his fire service career in 1982 as a Volunteer with the North Merrick Volunteer Fire Department in Long Island, New York. After accepting a recruit firefighter position, Chief Johnson started his operational career in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, graduating from the Training Academy in September 1983. After working his way through the ranks, Chief Johnson was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2009, where he was appointed to eventually lead three divisions, one in each of the department’s three bureaus to include Chief Training Officer, Deputy Chief assigned to the Special Operations Division and Deputy Chief of the Support Services Division. Chief Johnson served as a past member and Deputy Chief of the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team and is the former Fairfax County Task Force Leader of the National Medical Response Team. In December of 2014, Chief Johnson retired from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and immediately accepted the position of Assistant Chief of Operations with Loudoun County Fire and Rescue. In May of 2018, Chief Johnson was appointed as Chief where he is responsible for overseeing and leading the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System.
Chief Johnson is a graduate of the Northern Virginia Community College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science Administration and graduated from the University of Maryland University College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, minor in Fire Science. Chief Johnson completed his Master of Arts degree, in Security Studies; Homeland Security and Defense at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Chief Johnson is designated as a Chief Fire Officer by the Center for Public Safety Excellence and is certified as a Fire Official in the Commonwealth of Virginia and maintains Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator certifications with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.
Chief Johnson currently serves as Chair of the Governor’s appointed Virginia Fire Services Board as well as a board member of Governors appointed Virginia’s Board of Housing and Community Development. Chief Johnson is also Past-President of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association. Chief Johnson and his wife Barbara reside in Winchester, Virginia. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
