Captain
City of Decatur Fire and Rescue
Decatur, Georgia, United States
I am currently the Wellness and Prevention Captain for Decatur Fire Rescue, where I manage all of the social media accounts and coordinate many of the community events. I began my career in Fire 20 years ago with Riverdale Fire Services where I also focused heavily on community relations. As a Health and Wellness Instructor, Fire Instructor, Live Fire instructor, and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, I believe we have an obligation to not only train our personnel about their impact on the community in all of their interactions but also to keep the community aware of what we are doing and why we are doing it. I am an avid proponent of fitness in the firehouse, for our own health and safety and to inspire the community as we continue to respond to more and more preventable disease-related EMS calls with an emphasis on understanding the social determinants of health. I am also a staunch supporter of encouraging more female firefighters so we may better represent the community we serve. I have been a presenter at Fire-Rescue International, FDIC, NFPA, and the Georgia Women in Public Safety Conference. Recently I've been particularly interested in the role of emotional intelligence and implicit bias in how our firefighters interact with the community and each other.
