Recently firefighters are hearing a lot about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Although many embrace the topic and realize that learning about these issues is beneficial for us as an organization, there are others who may feel like they are being blamed for something they don't do, or think they never contributed to exclusionary practices or prejudged individuals within the fire service or the community. This presentation seeks to illustrate that bias exists within all of us, and is insidious because it is often an unconscious thought or action, not something we did with malice or forethought. By bringing these biases to light, and showing that we are ALL influenced by them, we become more aware of the lens through which we might be viewing a situation or a person at the station, on a call, or delivering community risk reduction programs.

Learning Objectives:

  • The participant will be able to define cognitive bias or logical fallacy and name several types of each.
  • The participant will learn to identify instances when these biases and fallacies may have harmed individuals within our communities and stations in the past, and how they can impact our community risk reduction efforts.
  • The participant will be able to recognize when biases or fallacies might be influencing them while making decisions and interacting with others at the station or in their communities and reframe their view to mitigate these influences.
