Building a Leadership Development Program focuses on reviewing the officer training programs developed cooperatively by the fire departments in Northern Virginia. A comprehensive review is provided for the Northern Virginia Leadership Development Institute (LDI) that offers annual company and command officer development courses delivered in weeklong residency-based and standard program formats. The LDI provides several fire officer course offerings that focus on strategy and tactics development and skill-based learning focused on leading employees, interacting with shift personnel, and dealing with the challenging scenarios faced by officers during non-incidents. This interactive class focuses on how a multi-agency program was developed, funded, managed annually, and maintained to provide critical training to 15 partner fire departments.

Upon completion of this session, the participant will understand how to develop a successful region-wide company and command officer leadership development program to include planning, preparation, delivery, and the after action review.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will see where the LDI has focused efforts on developing well rounded officers relating not only on operational performance, but training officers to lead in the most challenging times which is often interpersonal relations while not on the incident scene.
