Dr. Smith earned a BSc in Human Biology and a Ph.D. in Thermal Physiology from Loughborough University, UK, before completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Penn State University, researching skin blood flow and mechanisms of microvascular dysfunction. Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor and Director of the Thermal and Microvascular Physiology Laboratory at Appalachian State University, NC. Her research program focuses on physiological responses to environmental stressors, including heat and toxicant exposure, utilizing novel approaches for assessing dermal absorption and factors modulating absorption in firefighters.
