Assistant Chief Karl Kuhlman has been an integral part of the San Marcos Fire Department (TX) since 1994. Rising through the ranks, he was appointed as the Assistant Chief over Operations and Training in 2009, and currently oversees Administration and Personnel.
Chief Kuhlman holds an Associate's degree in Fire Protection Technology from Austin Community College, graduating on the President’s Honor Roll, and a BAAS degree from Texas State University – San Marcos, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. His academic journey continued with a Master of Science in Accounting and Information Technology from Texas State University – San Marcos, where he received the Outstanding Master’s Student Award from the McCoy College of Business Administration. He is currently pursuing an Associate's degree in GIS, with expected graduation in the fall.
Chief Kuhlman is professionally credentialed as a Certified Public Manager (CPM) from the William P. Hobby Center for Public Service and as a Certified Fire Executive (CFE) from the Texas Fire Chiefs Association. His commitment to the fire service is further demonstrated by his active involvement as a member of the IAFC Tech Council and chairperson of the GIS Working Group. His career is marked by a dedication to leadership, education, and continuous improvement within the fire service.
